What is Shooto?

Shooto is a combat sport that is governed by the Shooto Association and the International Shooto Commission. Shooto was originally formed in 1985, as an organization and as a particular fighting system derived from shoot wrestling. Practitioners are referred to as shooters, similarly to practitioners of shoot wrestling. Shooto competitions are often considered to be mixed martial arts competitions, since they share similar rules to several other mixed martial arts competitions. The word shooto is an English transliteration of 修斗 (pronounced shu-to); an ateji derived from the English word “shoot”. The word 修斗 can be translated as “learned combat”.

What is Modified Shooto?

Modified Shooto is a self-defense form, which encompasses the essence of Japanese Shooto. Modified Shooto is my own personal interpretation of the martial arts based upon my many years of experience. As a “Learned Combat” Mixed Martial Art form, Modified Shooto has a wide variety of skills brought from other martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, Hapkido, Kickboxing and Capoeira. The ground fighting and takedown elements are a mixture of Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and wrestling. Modified Shooto is always evolving to meet today’s growing need for self-defense. The end goal is to make all practitioners of Modified Shooto a true wellrounded fighter for personal self-defense and even modern day competition of any sort.
